31 Days to a New Year – DAY 1

December 1, 2011: As a coach and consultant my clients are constantly seeking that small piece of practical advice that they can put to work immediately. Around thanksgiving I was thinking about how many will claim a New Year’s resolutions only to forget about them less than 30-days into the process. Change is not an easy subject to discuss in a few short paragraphs. Change is hard and it takes time. It is believed that lasting change can take place if consistent patterns are adhered to for 30-days and in some extreme cases as long as 60 to 90-days.

Consider this a 31-day challenge to prepare for the New Year. I plan to post a short segment every day. Each segment should take you no more than 15 to 30 minutes a day to act on. Keep each day together as they will build on the other.

DAY 1: What are you tolerating?

On a sheet of paper or in your journal, write down as many things as you can think of that you are tolerating. Don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it – just write down what comes to mind. Ideas would be: tolerating poor diet, lack of exercise, etc.  Things we tolerate are the very things we know we need to change but we have yet taken the time and effort to do anything about them. The things we tolerate block us from changing because – many times – the pain of change is (in our minds) greater than the pain of staying where you are.

Get started and we will take the next step tomorrow.
