31 Days to a New Year – DAY 6

December 6, 2011— DAY 6: I will often ask a client if they write down their goals and objectives for any given period of time. Most often than not they will say “no” I am too busy, etc. When I was an executive of a very busy media company I had to keep myself organized. The one sure way was to keep both short term and long term goals written down. I kept a goals and action sheet for every day I was in the organization. On the sheet I wrote down such things as the things I needed to accomplish that day, important telephone calls, long-term goals I needed to work on, a section for things I needed to spend “think time” on and finally a section that reminded me I needed to read about 15 to 30 minutes a day and a space for me to write down what I wanted to read. I wrote these things down for two main reasons. First, they kept me on track and on focus. Secondly it gave me a record by which to measure my progress.

Today – I would like you to take yesterday’s goals list and write down the following next to each goal:

  1. When will I have achieved the goal

  2. How will I measure the success of its completion

  3. What resources do I need to achieve the goal

  4. How do I obtain these resources (if applicable).

  5. What seems to be the most likely next step after I complete this goal

Goals are never about a destination but a journey. When one goal is completed there should be another goal to carry you to the next station of your journey. One step at a time whether you like it or not you are moving toward a new year. You have 25 days left. There is still time to make the changes necessary. Make the decision today to no longer live a mediocre life or life as usual. It is time to dust off those dreams, hopes and desires and live out an extraordinary life.
