Rest and Relaxation – Summer 2011

It is officially summer time. The kids are out of school, camps are in full swing, and families are trying to decide what they are going to do for a vacation. Many families are in tough economic times and are trying to figure out what they can afford to do for vacation.

There is much to be said about taking time to relax and recharge those mental batteries. Even if you can’t afford to go somewhere, taking time to relax is essential for us all. There are likely many options within a short driving distance of you. I wanted to offer some ideas that may help you achieve rest and relaxation on a tight budget.

My personal favorite thing to do is hike. If I could hike every weekend, I probably would. There are many local, state and federal parks in my area that are either FREE or very low cost to enter. The extent of your costs are in fuel for the car and a small entrance fee.  Museums are also an option. Many cities offer free and reduced costs for residents. When was the last time you went to the museum. Some cities offer movies or even music in the park.  My town has a summer jazz series in the town square. Use your imagination – maybe convert your backyard into a low cost oasis. Kiddy pool aside you don’t have to spend a lot of money to relax. You might even chose to spend a week of vacation doing nothing more than reading and watching movies.Check out your local chamber of commerce, library, parks system or even the bookstore for ideas on local attractions and options for your stay-cation.

What is important is to take time for yourself and your family. Reconnect with the spouse and kids. Recharge your mental batteries. Rest is good for you!  I spent a week on the beach down in Florida with a bunch of friends. We split the cost of the condo rental, gas and food amongst 7 people. A week on the beach for cheap – that’s what I say!

Get the whole family involved and come up with some fun ideas. And above all, ENJOY some down time!
